Description of the programme:

Specialisation of the professional programme Electronics is industrial electronics. Automated systems of the contemporary industrial and transport productions are work on the basis of processor devices and industrial robots with the use of sensors, executive devices and industrial networks. The basic elements of automation of production are programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and industrial robots.

PLCs are used to control technological processes of diverse complexity: from manufacturing of automobiles and rail traffic control to the bottling of drinking water and stamping of pastry at the food industry companies. Tens of companies deal with the development of PLCs, and the PLC sales volume reached 10 billion dollars in 2015; and this figure grows by 20% each year. By performing manipulations and working operations with the objects from micro to macro sizes, industrial robots substitute humans in hard, tiresome and dangerous jobs. According to the data of the International Federation of Robotics, it is planned to sell 250 thousand of industrial robots in 2016, whereas the annual increase in sales is more than 10%. At the same time, the expansion of the types of industrial robot operations is observed, the possibility of operational readjustment and autonomous programming of robots under the production conditions is ensured.

On the one hand, said expansion and increase in the degree of automation of production leads to staff reduction, but, on the other hand, it increases the demand for the engineers who know how to install, program and maintain PLCs, industrial robots and electronic equipment of the automated systems of industrial and transport productions.

The professional programme Electronics is directed toward provision of professional knowledge and development of practical skills which a graduate needs for the successful activity in the field of industrial automation and robotics. At the initial stage of studies, the students complete the basic engineering courses which consider the fundamentals of electrical engineering and automatic control, analogue and digital electronics, programming of micro-controllers and microprocessor-based control systems, sensors and actuating devices of automation systems. The students obtain special knowledge by studying PLCs and special features of programming thereof, industrial robots and programming thereof, robotised complexes and embedded systems of industrial facilities, methods of automated system design and robotised production software.

During the study process, laboratory stands equipped with PLCs, software and accessory equipment of Siemens AG Corporation, the Kawasaki and Kuka industrial robots are used. Contemporary equipment helps the students to successfully develop practical skills and shape creative independence. Before the diploma project, the students undergo mandatory practical training at the leading profile companies in Latvia and EU states.

The professional programme Electronics opens the way to the creative and promising engineering activity for many years to come. Cooperation of TSI with the company ATLANT-TEC Automation which deals with the preparation of cells for the Kuka industrial robots on the conveyors of the concern Volkswagen provides graduates of the programme with the possibility to undergo practical training and continue working for the company ATLANT-TEC Automation after the completion of studies. Graduates of the programme work and are in demand at such companies as Hansamatrix, Olainfarm, Latvian Railways, etc.

The high level of theoretical training and hands-on experience makes it possible for the graduates of the programme to establish their own small firms which implement projects related to the automation of industrial facilities.
