The Telematics and Logistics Institute (TLI) has been developed with the aim of making productive contributions to the continued progress of the transportation industry in Latvia by conducting applied research and development work in contemporary and future transportation issues.

Objectives

The Institute is committed to encourage and promote collaborative work between practitioners and academics in various facets of transportation research relevant to the needs of Latvia.

The broad objectives are to:

  • identify possible future directions, new designs and techniques for transportation infrastructure development and facility upgrading;
  • introduce appropriate state-of-the-art technologies and recommend ways and means by which suitable technologies could be incorporated into our transportation systems;
  • study the characteristics and unique features of our transportation systems, and propose ways to best service and manage the existing infrastructure;
  • generate cost-effective solutions to further improve the operational capacity and efficiency of the existing air, sea and land transportation systems.

Short Courses and Seminars

As part of the effort to promote research and development, and to increase the awareness of students and practising engineers of the activities of the Institute, short courses and seminars are organised periodically by the Institute. Course instructors and seminar speakers comprise Institute research staff highlighting their research findings, as well as eminent transportation professionals and experts from Singapore and overseas. The Institute also sponsors local and international conferences to encourage the exchange of ideas among researchers, transportation practitioners and engineers.

Education Opportunities

Financial assistance in the form of research scholarships, research assistantships and industrial sponsorships are available for those who are interested in pursuing post-graduate degrees in transportation-related areas. Full-time and part-time research programmes leading to M.Eng or PhD degrees are offered. Candidates should possess a good honour degree or equivalent in Engineering.

Research Activities

The Institute is currently involved in different collaborative research projects:

  • studies on freight movement, logistics and telematics sponsored by grant of Latvian Council of Science "Optimisation of Latvian Transport System";
  • studies on "intelligent" transport system, information environment for urban transportation, elaboration of Riga Metropolitan Transport Development Programme "Optimisation of urban transport system", sponsored by Riga City Council,
  • studies on modern satellite technologies in air traffic control CNS/ATM (Communications, Navigation and Surveillance for Air Traffic Management) in collaboration with Latvian Air Navigation Service,
  • studies on Intermodality within the frame of Working Group N3 of "R&D Transport Central and Eastern Europe Countries Group (RE.TRA.EST)" activities in the Field of Intermodal Transport Between the EU and CEEC

Collaboration Opportunities

The Institute invites and welcomes collaborative research with private organisations, government departments and statutory boards. There are various schemes of collaboration ranging from contract research to partial sponsorship of manpower and equipment. Topics for investigations are usually identified jointly by the sponsors and Institute research staff. Research staff of the Institute has been actively involved in collaborative research with the industry. Among the collaborating parties are the Latvian Transport Development and Education Organisation, Latvian Air Navigation Service Enterprise, Riga Commercial Port, Riga City Council, Riga International Airport, State Railway Company and others.
